Common Home Inspection Flags from Shower Faucet Leaking to Faucet Corrosion

In this episode of Home Inspections from A to Z, we take a look at the many issues surrounding your faucets and fixtures as part of your home’s plumbing system. From your shower faucet leaking to faucet corrosion, there are common problems that can usually be addressed quickly.

Your faucet is responsible for bringing in fresh, clean, hot or cold water, day in and day out. So when a problem occurs, it can become a real hassle. Problems in this area of home inspections are commonly seen in homes that are aging. Fortunately, many of these issues are Qwik Fixes and can be easily resolved before your home inspection.

1. Loose Faucet

A loose or unsecured faucet is likely to be flagged in a home inspection. It can also cause other issues as water seeps into unwanted spaces and creases. Even if you have a newer faucet, it is important that it is properly secured when installed to avoid further damage to cabinets below. This may require tightening a few loose screws, bolts, or the nut that holds your faucets base into place. 

A shower faucet leaking will cause water deposits and corrosion that will need to be addressed and potentially replaced.

2. Shower Faucet Leaking

We all know what a dripping faucet sounds like, but many aren’t too sure of the reasoning behind it. Dripping or leaking faucets can cause molding, corrosion and eventually increase your water bill over time. A shower faucet leaking is common due to the use that the shower gets and how long the water is often kept on. The kitchen sink is another common culprit. To correctly fix your shower faucet leaking, you can replace old cartridges or valves with new similar ones. In more serious cases, you should call a plumber to inspect the plumbing system behind your wall. 

Faucets without a backstop will be flagged in a home inspection report.
A faucet that does not have a backstop will be flagged in a home inspection. If this occurs you may need to replace individual parts or the entire faucet.

3. Backstopping

If your faucet handle makes a complete spin around when turning on or off, it is most likely stripped or worn out. To fix this common household issue you should replace the faucet handle, washer, or other pieces completely.

A corroded shower faucet or other faucet in your home can block water from flowing and should be cleaned regularly to avoid further issues.
A corroded faucet can block water from flowing freely, causing other more serious issues. This is typically a QwikFix and can easily be cleaned off.

4. Corrosion

Another common flag, typically seen in older faucets, is corrosion occurring over time. Resulting in uneven water flows, splashing, or in other more serious cases, causing your faucet to not function at all. The good news is that this is a Qwik fix and can be removed using gentle acids such as white vinegar and lemon juice. If that doesn’t work, you should replace your faucet completely.
