Attic Door Insulation
In this episode of Home Inspections from A to Z we take a look at possible flags surrounding your attic insulation. Although you may not see it on a daily basis, your attic insulation is important to the functioning of your home. A properly insulated attic, notably attic door, can reduce your home’s energy consumption and stabilize indoor temperatures. This can reduce your monthly electric bills, and so much more!

Upside Down Insulation
A common flag we see reported in home inspections is ‘upside down insulation.’ This can lead to a number of issues. Paper moisture barriers can provide an important level of protection between insulation and the ceiling below it. When insulation is improperly placed, it can cause issues with molding and structural deterioration. Also, creating fire hazards due to the flammable paper being exposed. This is an issue you might be able to fix on your own by flipping your insulation over the correct way. However, signs of flatness or deterioration will result in adding new or completely replacing your attic insulation.

Can Lighting
Another common flag is the insulation surrounding your canned lighting. “Can lights”, commonly known as recessed lights, add a contemporary feel to your home. Instead of hanging from the outside of the ceiling, can lights are installed through your ceiling. This allows their back to be extended into the attic. It is important to properly install insulation in your ceiling at least 6 inches away from Can Lighting. This will avoid overheating and fire hazards. Insulation compatibles or IC can also help to maintain proper temperatures and protect your can lighting.
